Hi all,

I’m new to 3D Printing but I’m keen to get involved and purchase a relatively lower-end model 3D Printer to get started. Has anyone got any suggestions as to where I might look to purchase one? Happy to consider second-hand models also.

I bought a Prusa Explorer from http://www.3dstuffmakers.com/ - on eBay, but similar price from their website. Sydney based company, kits made, shipped and supported from India. It was a kit, but it all worked, and is still working after about 2 years. Have a look at their Prusa Gen 2 Kit for USD 395. Buy it when the exchange rate is more favourable ! And it comes with very helpful, useful Skype support. If you want to look at some machines, have a look at http://3dprintersuperstore.com.au/ - they have a shop in Collingwood that is easy to get to.

Da Vinci 1.0a. Super easy to use and if you get a bit more into it, you can flash it with repetier to get more control over all the features.

Hi Brian,

Have a look at Up mini or Up 2+. I have an Up machine and it just works. The other thing to consider is size. Up mini has a build env of 120mm while Up 2+ is around 140mm. The strong point of the Up machines is they are a black box and they just print with minimal mucking around with with settings. This can also be a negative if you want to get in there and tweak settings to your desires.

From my (limited) research, the best value right now is the Prusia i3 models. Generic design, with a handful of different people/companies selling models.

eg.

It’s a put together model though, which requires some technical know-how and adjustments.

Depending on how much you want to spend i’d recommend the Ultimaker printers, Prusa i3, printrbot simple metal or the lulzbot printers. I use a Creatr HS by leapfrog but i think this doesnt fit into your price range or if this is a good printer for beginners, maybe the normal Creatr by leapfrog would work too.

I do not know about 2nd hand printers since most of the printers that are worth it to buy as 2nd hand are kept by the owners as they upgrade the printer.

ive been printing with the Up! Mini for 2 years. The results are still really good and as you say, it just works!

The Printrbot is always a good choice for first time 3D printer owners. Its an easy upgrade from there!

The price is low enough that I would recommend going for new. That way, if something goes wrong, you can always reach out to the manufacturer. With used, its hard to see what the problems is if its your first time and the manufacturer may not be able to assist.

I’m definitely looking at a lower end model so the first few that you mentioned are probably not exactly what I’m looking for.

Also, good advise on the second hand printers I’ll certainly keep that in mind so thank you for that

ahh, didn’t realise Printers could be upgraded? makes sense I guess but I just assumed people would upgrade by purchasing newer models as they become more experienced etc…

I will look into the Da Vinci 1.0a. thanks for that…

We have had good success with the UP+ though they are are a fairly old design now. They are cheap at the moment as they are bringing out the new model “UP Box”.
