So, I discovered something interesting this weekend, I printed a Marvin in woodfil and when he was done I put him in my pocket. A few days later I was looking for him. After doing laundry I found him in my pocket. Somewhere between being washed and tumble dried he became slightly polished and his layers had been sanded down.
Now I will have to try to repeat this process, has anyone ever put a woodfil piece in a tumbler before?

Hey @lalap, if you check the Tutorial section of Talk, you’ll notice few posts that @coleoptero did on the subject: Tumbling for shine and Adventures of Marvin. Hope this helps!
I’d also be curious to see how does a woodfill Marvin straight outta the laundry machine looks like
I’ll post a picture a little later. Also, I don’t think he has done woodfil though.
Woodfill no but I have read about using acetone on a rag to slightly soften the outer layers and smooth them over. ColorFabb plastic seems semi-sensitive to acetone as I figured out by accident once! That said the heat from the drier maybe what caused the layers to smooth slightly. On Printed Solid’s website blog you can read about using heat to finish a wood model although care must be taken to ensure you don’t overdo it and wreck the model.
For me I just stick with sanding and oiling after but ill do a video about it soon.
I tried sanding this woodfil I have but it turned white everywhere I sanded it. I think there might be more plastic than wood in the filament or something along those lines.
Here is a picture of the back side. This was originally printed at .2 layer height. I know it is not super shiny and glossy but this is a lot more shiny than it was before.
@gabriela3d
I find it gets pretty white from 180 > 200 and then when I jump to 500/800 grit it gets to near original color. Then I rub it down with a little oil (you can get furniture oil but i use 3-1 oil) and that brings the original color right back!
Hmm okay I’ll have to try that.
You’re definitely onto something there, @lalap!
And thanks for jumping in the discussion, @coleoptero. You’re the tumbling/ polishing master now!
I think it is probably the chemicals in the laundry rather than the actual act of tumbling. Idk though… Interesting!
Thanks @gabriela3d I don’t count myself an expert but that is my take!
@lalap I am going to try the acetone trick on my model. You may want to make a few Marvin’s and mess around with soaking them in like dish washing detergent and trying other methods of finishing. That is what I do… makes it a lot more scientific!

Yeah, I was also going to try putting them in actone. I also thought about putting them in a rice cooker woth water and seeing if the heat did anything. I could also try the detergent too.
If you put them into acetone your going to dissolve poor Marvin. Wear a glove and put some acetone on a t-shirt rag and rub it onto the model with some force and you will notice it smooths the layer lines over. Do note it also turns the PLA white… nothing a little oil shouldn’t fix!
