Has any one here printed with wood filament on the robo r1 ? Let me know how it went

Anything in particular you want to print?

I have used Polywood (Kickstarter reward) on the R1,with mixed results. Might be a little moisture - the filament is almost a year old now. Also, my firmware just got updated - my z axis calibration was off. Printed a 10 cm tower that came out at 9 cm. Haven’t tried it after the update. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with the Polywood . I haven’t tried any other brands yet.

I’ve done a lot of printing with Bamboofill from Colorfabb on my R1. It has a really nice finish to it, nicer than any plastics I’ve used.

On the R1 it prints very well without modification. I’ve printed with both 0.4 and 0.6mm nozzles and had jams with both though the 0.6mm does present less of a risk. The risk of jamming is reduced by keeping the flow rate up, so zero retraction, 65mm/s speed and a 200 micron layer height or higher. Of course these settings don’t lend themselves to the best quality print but this is the case for any printer when working with wood. It is also important to clean the hobbled bolt and the extruder between prints as tar and burnt wood particles build up in the extruder increasing the risk of a jam. I use the atomic pull method which seems to work very well.

Being PLA/PHA based it doesn’t handle overhangs as well as plain PLA. If you sand it it will lose it’s nice golden colour and turn pale; in fact anywhere the filament breaks will leave a whitish mark so expect supported surfaces to have a poorer finish as well as anywhere you need to remove bobbles (it oozes a lot). It is also quite brittle so to get a good strong print it is important to over extrude a little; I generally use an extrusion multiplier of 1.1 with good results.

Aside from these idiosyncrasies it is really quite easy to work with and while the risk of a jam can never be completely mitigated, the quality of the finish makes the extra risk worthwhile in my mind.

Prints just like PLA. No problem. I have printed all filaments on my Robo R1 including Poltcarbonate . Used same settings for wood that I use on PLA . Nozzle 210 Bed 50 Speed 50 mm/sec, used glue stick on bed. Printed a threaded container and was perfect threads. Bump up temp if you want darker wood

Barnecles nergasm has a video on it

Nice video on YouTube from Barnacules

Was about to put up the same exact video. You beat me to it
