Hi!

For my new 3d print service I chose 3D Hubs, because it’s the all-in-one solution for printing and shipping prints.

But I have a serious problem. At the time of my registration everything worked just fine. I could visit other hubs, read here at the talks and visit/edit my hub page. But from one day to another the website stopped working like it should. I could still open the main site, but when I click on the login link, talk, learn and so on I get a timeout or another error (connection reset, no secure connection possible …)

Where does this happen:
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (32 bit)

  • Firefox
  • Chromium
  • the default browser

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit)

  • same browsers

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (64 bit live version from an USB stick)

  • Firefox
  • Chromium

I also tried another laptop from a friend that recently got Ubuntu installed (14.04 LTS 64 bit), same here.

My girlfriends’ laptop has Windows 8.1, everything is working fine with Chrome and Firefox.

Since I have a dual boot system on my own laptop, I’m now in Windows 7 and am able to write to you. Also my and my girlfriends’ Android smartphone can use the website normally.

2 weeks ago I got another hit in the face. I went to my parents over the weekend. When I tried the website with their wireless network, everything worked as it should with Ubuntu o_O Then I got really confused …

Back at home I thought it could be the firewall from our cable modem. But as before, nothing changed, the website is not working. Also our ISP couldn’t find any problems (which was no surprise since most of our devices could use the website normally).

tl;dr: The 3D Hubs website doesn’t work in my home network under Ubuntu (any version). But every other OS and device can open it correctly. Only in another network it works as it should. Two months ago it worked just fine, even with Ubuntu.

Does anyone here have the same problem? I have set up all my business software under Ubuntu, because at the time of registration everything worked as it should. I don’t want to go back to Windows (and begin nearly by zero with my business software) because one website doesn’t work correctly :frowning:

Hey @pfrigeri, most likely it has something to do with your network, since Ubuntu works on your parents’ connection. Not sure what the problem might be here - @Bram @Bernard do you guys have any idea on what might cause this?

Hey DeadDealer, thanks for doing so much research into this issue. It’s a very peculiar one. One thing we did some time ago is adjust our SSL settings to be ready for changes in modern browsers, deprecating the use of less secure encryption algorithms. We check our settings against the SSLLabs SSL Server test, you can find the report here: SSL Server Test: 3dhubs.com (Powered by Qualys SSL Labs)… As you can see the handshake simulation is successful for all but ancient software.

I’d like to investigate this with you a little further, could you maybe share the output of

curl -v Talk Manufacturing | Hubs

and

openssl s_client -connect www.3dhubs.com:443

Let’s try to make this work!

Bram

Hello Bram

thanks for your help. I’ve uploaded the two outputs.

Fun fact: simple txt files are not ok for upload, but more complex file types like stl, obj, dxf …

One information about the output from openssl. After the line “Verify return code: 19 (self signed certificate in certificate chain)” nothing happens for about one minute, just like when I try to open a sub page with a browser.

I really hope this can help us.

Greetings

Hey DeadDealer, thanks for getting back to me! I’ve removed the self-signed cert from the chain, does this help?

Hello again,

unfortunately it is still not working.

I had to bite the bullet and continue my work with Windows -_-

The main reasons are:

  • still no correct connection under Ubuntu or other Linux systems
  • more problems after an update which caused a bunch of broken libraries
  • the label printer for address stickers and production control stopped working (also libraries?)
  • my provider tried to help a second time with a more experienced operator, sadly with no success. Another try could cause costs for a service technician

This is why it took so long to respond to your last message. I had two choices: Try to repair all the stuff and loose a lot (more) time, or switch to Windows, search for alternative software and begin with a fresh start.

I’m very very sad that this experiment with an open source approach didn’t go well, but on the other side I need to get my business started. Maybe in some months I will try a second run with Linux.

So, please look forward for the production start of my Hub in some days
