Hi all, I am contemplating getting a CTC Dual for a bit of extra capacity in a hurry, to sit alongside my Replicator 2.
Is anyone already using the CTC Dual with MakerBot Desktop?
Q: Did this work ‘out of the box’ using one of the stock profiles (Replicator dual?) or did it take a particular combination of CTC supplied/Sailfish/updated profiles in MakerBot Desktop?
I’m already an active RepRapper and professionally support MakerBots, so I don’t doubt that I can get this running, and I have seen a couple of posts on related issues which look helpful, but don’t 100% confirm it plays nicely with MakerBot’s software at the end of it. I am just trying to get a view on whether I can expect to use it with MakerBot Desktop from Day 1!
Thanks in advance!
Alex
It’s plug and play with makerware when I got mine but I soon updated it to sailfish and s3d, makerware can’t compare to s3d capabilities. To get accurate consistent prints a few mods are needed which you can print such as pillow blocks for y axis, filament guide, and glass bed, everything else is just a nice thing like the bronze bushings and z stabilizer. Sailfish is a must for firmware. The original is not that great.
hey Alex, makerbot desktop will recognise it out of the box as a replicator 1 duo. It has a sailfish firmware and that also works with makerbot desktop, updating is really easy. it will work nice from day one, but with some upgrades you can improve it even more. Cheers, Rence
Hi
mine worked out of the box after a wiring mix-up was sorted. The seller was terrific in her customer support. I use Makerbot software which instantly recognised the printer. I’m still learning the best set up for best print results but as a first time entry into 3D printing I’m well pleased with my choice of printer.

Out of the box it should work with Makerbot’s software-- mine did --but frankly that software is next to useless for any serious use, and I’d highly recommend Simplify3D. It’s worth every penny…and I say that as someone whose only printer barely cost 3x what Simplify3D does.
I have been using makerbot desktop since I got my ctc (over 7 months ago) and I ah net had a problem with it, lots of people slate the software and so i tried using simplify 3D but the prints were never centred and it set the bed temperature to 120 every time, If anyone know the cause of these problems please let me know. As for the makerbot software I don’t think it is bad at all, it doesn’t let you configure every little detail like simplyfy 3D or Cura because it has been simplified by a great deal and it is very beginner friendly.

Hi all, thanks very much for the feedback, all on topic and helpful, this is a great forum
I will be going for the CTC, short term this will act as a backup to my Replicator 2 for some jobs, and will also contribute a Mightyboard clone to my review of current firmware and electronics options, as I develop my own electronics, so the Rep2 can remain unhacked.
Many thanks
Alex
It took me quite a bit of work to get it to work a lot of software updates on the printer but after that I had no problems. But that’s only for single extrusion printing I’m still trying to figure out how to get the duel extrusion to work with makerbot.
Do you know how to set up models on the build plate for different nozzles?
