Hi Guys,

I always get a “tool 1 error, check wiring” when I start the printer. This is for the left printer…I know you are supposed to preheat the extruder before unscrewing it, but since I cannot heat the left extruder, is it ok to unscrew while cold?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks

Hey Akshay,

the idea behind preheating the nozzle before unscrewing is thermal expansion. While heated, the threads of the heater block and nozzle are slightly larger and therefore interfere differently than when at room temperature. This also means, that when tightened while hot, at room temperature the screwed connection is a lot tighter than you would usually achieve with a wrench. So when trying to unscrew the nozzle cold, you may need so much torque that you’ll end up breaking things. Even with a second wrench to counter that torque, like on an E3D, this risk is still present.

You could try a heat gun/blow torch to heat up the nozzle externally.

Sincerely,

Jonas

I agree with Jonas on this. Unscrewing it cold you risk damaging the print head more… if you don’t have a torch or heat gun, try your build plate. Disassemble the heater block from the step motors and fans, then set the nozzle and heating unit on the build plate. Turn up the heat as high you need safely in the preheat options for your printer (my Creator Pro as a upper limit of 130 degrees, 70 to 80 should be more than enough though.) After a couple minutes the heat transferred from the plate should be enough make the nozzle’s thermal expiation high enough to remove safely (it has to be cool enough to touch and handle without burning yourself, so you can let is cool a bit until it gets to that point.)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses. Yes I will not unscrew this before heating it up…Thanks Dhin for the idea to heat it up with the heated bed.

Cheers!
