Hello,

I have attached an image of how my Flashforge Creator Pro via Makerware is consistently creating ugly first layers. I am in the process of switching to a glass plate from my current kapton one; however, I am not convince that will reconcile my issues. I know that the outline speed is what controls this and I have it set to 40 mm/s. The one in the picture is 60 mm/s. Either should work. My travel speed is 150mm/s. Any ideas? I am printing ABS at 225c with a platform of 110c.

Also, my rafts are 10 mm/s.

Thank you in advance,

Erik

Bump your temperature up to 230C or 235C. Reduce your bed temp to 95 or 100C.

When printing ABS on my flashforge I use a print speed of 40 mm/sec and a travel speed of 60 mm/sec. Make sure you set the first layer to print slower…can’t remember what I use off the top of my head - its the default for Simplify3D.

I suggest you try those settings

I had no problems printing on Kapton that came installed on the bed. I have since switched to glass with ABS juice for convenience.

I also recommend doing a calibration cube and setting your extrusion multiplier.

Good luck!

Thank you for the quick reply.

I am inputting those settings now. Unfortunately, Makerware does not have an option to set the extrusion multiplier. I will most likely switch to glass and juice I have one ordered.

This may be a novice questions, but when I do the calibration cube, what do I look for? continuity of the layer passes, smoothness, etc… stuff like that?

Should I switch to simplify 3d? Makerware works wonderfully at school on the makerbots with glass plates. So I don’t see why it wouldn’t work here despite the lack of settings that simplify has.

I frequently use these two guides for troubleshooting print problems -

https://www.simplify3d.com/support/print-quality-troubleshooting/

For extruder calibration, this is what I follow:

I’ve never used Makerware personally. Before switching to SImplify3D I used Slic3r. Its really a matter of opinion. I think $150 is a lot for the software - if it were $50-100 I’d say everyone should use it. I bought it because I wanted more customization for support structures without having to modify the base 3D file. Its also very easy to set up dual extruder prints. I like that you can easily save different profiles. Again, just a matter of opinion and cost.

Thank you for the resources Johnny. I have checked out the links and they have helped immensely. I also purchased Simplify3D and all of a sudden my prints are turning out great. Only one issue… I can’t get them off the blue kapton plate now! The model has already ripped open one kapton covering (which I replaced), only to have it happen again. I never thought that I would have the problem of ABS sticking too much to the kapton. hmmmm

Any ideas? Thank you again for all of you help.

Seems to be working better now. Will be switching to glass soon. Thanks again.

Erik

Glad it worked. Yes, some times ABS sticks too well to Kapton and it rips when you remove. One of the reasons I switched to glass.
