I have received two 3d printers for Christmas however both of these units have to be assembled and I am not mechanically minded at all.

The first printer is a geeetech prusa i3 pro b I have read that this needs a lot of upgrades before you can produce a decent print with it.

The second is a Anet a8 which apparently has safety issues with power supply etc

I was looking before Christmas at the wanhao i3 duplicator v2 1 3d printer. To me the prints from this unit are smooth and more professional looking and it requires very little assembly.

I was thinking of perhaps selling the 2 new printer kits and using the money to get a better one.

Could someone give me some guidance as I know nothing about 3d printing or printers.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards Ian

I think you have the right idea. The Wanhao will save you the work (and sometimes grief) of assembling something with which you are not yet familiar. Of course, after six months of using the Wanhao you’ll have the knowledge, and you may start eyeing those kits again…

Check Craigslist and eBay and see what the two you have are going for in your area.

Good luck!

Wanhaos are great and I’ve heard reality cr-10s are also really good and in that price range. The kits are great only after you have had a good printer otherwise they are a frustrating pain.

Thanks Andrew, however I’m intrigued by your answer. I have placed the geeetech prusa i3 pro b on e-bay, hopefully to bring in about £120.00 ish . Someone told me that the A8 was the better of the two kits. I’m still unsure what to do and you mentioned that after using the Wanhow for a while I may look at a kit again, so I’m wondering why? A little about me; I’m into environmental 3d modelling (3ds max, unreal engine etc ) / musician and I also build my own pc’s although never built anything so … mechanical . I suppose my aim is to make reasonable smooth models without the hassle of treating with acids etc. Would the resolution of the Wanhow be better that of the A8 with upgrades?

Thanks again Ian

Hi Ian, I’m afraid my knowledge is too limited to provide any thoughts on such. The reason for mentioning that you may look at kits again in six months, is that’s about how long it took me to become familiar enough with my printer (a Monoprice Mini) to start thinking about building a kit.

Ok Andrew, thanks for your reply.

I have an Anet A8 and it works perfectly all right without any issues related to the power supply. Besides, Geeetech Prusa i3 pro would definitely need proper updates for working.

As per me, do not sell the Anet A8. You could sell the other one instead.

Thanks for your advice. I am just assembling the A8 now, I’m going to do it slowly over a couple of days.
