Hey guys, I just wanted to post something that I think is pretty cool. Many people worry about their build plate size confining them to that one size. I dont see that. I like to make big models from my printers. I make it in sections and then glue, weld, lock, etc them together. This is one of my latest models, check it out and let me know what you think! The link below sends you to my blog with more pictures.

Still the same impressive quality as last time you posted

Great work! Which pieces were glued or locked together? I cannot tell! Also, did you print them using Replicator 2? Even when I used the “high” quality, I could not get to the quality you demonstrated. Any tricks? Thanks.
Pretty simple…however, a little work. Yes, everything was made with my rep 2 and rep 2x.
This model is made up of about 40 parts or so. I use friction welding (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wghk6K7UgbM ) I posted a link to it for you.
After you weld it, sand it smooth, coat it with “Smooth on XTC 3D” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGk7PYkAl_w), then bondo it if needed, then paint it.
I print everything at .3 or .2 layer height. Gets them out of the machine really fast. Then I spend my time getting them aligned right and smooth.
Thanks! The friction welding is cool and I will give it a try.
Hi Relentless design,
Great quality model, look very impressive. I understand what you are saying about making it in sections and then glueing/locking it together etc but I just can’t be bothered doing all that post processing. It will be a happy day when I can print large models with absolutely no post processing required, all supports dissolved away, the right colours already there and multiple materials all in one!
But in the meantime great model and that is the way to do big prints outside your printers build volume.
Cheers
Andrew
Thanks, yes it would be awesome! I see it will be a little longer than expected though
The customer really want their models to represent their products exact! They almost all the time request to use their paint. So, in most cases with me it is something I will have to do.
One day it will be a click and print.
