For Monoprice Mini 3D Printer:
Somehow during printing, the filament encircled and climbed the extruder nozzle, and got all over the tape that holds insulation against the extruder block. I heated the extruder back up to get the extrusion material off of the block, but it pulled the tape and insulation off.
Writing the company, they want me to buy another block.
Does anyone else have a simpler and cheaper solution? If I can remove the block to replace, I should be able to remove the block, and put on a piece of tape and a thin layer of insulation. I’m wondering what kind of tape it is, and where I might find some appropriate insulation.
Thanks kindly.
Hi Bob,
Maddie here from 3D Hubs.
Without seeing the printer myself I can’t be sure, but most companies use a combination of Kapton tape and ceramic insulation or other heat-resistant cloth to keep the heat block’s temperature stable. If the tape was a transparent orange-gold color, that’s Kapton, also known as polyimide tape.
A quick search for “3d printer heat block insulation” should yield many cheap options for replacement
I hope this helps!
Best,

The tape is kapton and the insulation is just a ceramic cloth or something. Pretty easy to find on the internet looking at 3d printing stuff. It also isn’t always necessary so you may be able to get away without it
I have the same machine.
I thought the same thing when mine came off, back in December. You can by Kapton tape
and the insulation, on Amazon and eBay for under fifteen bucks.
I bought them and they look great in their packages. Turns out, unless you are planning
to push your nozzle to 240c and higher, you don’t need it. PETG can require those higher
temps and ABS certainly does, but for PLA, don’t bother.
It’s a great machine. Infinite mods available.
I ripped the insulation on my Maker Select when I first replaced the nozzle and have used it ever since with no problem. I only print with PLA though, so for other filaments you may need to replace it.
