I have a 5.5 year old Replicator 2 with loads of hours on it. It has been recently printing as if there is no retraction as there are strings between parts, and lots of them. I have a 2nd Rep 2 and with the same settings it prints just fine.
Is there something on Rep 2s that wears out so it does not retract properly?

Normally speaking, you should be able to feel the movement off the filament with your fingers during printer.
So you could check if it is actually retracting or not.
You could also try to lower your print temperature. Stringing can be cause by a too high temperature because the viscosity of the filament increased when it gets hotter. If your temp sensor doesn’t measure accurately, you might be printing at a higher temperature than the sensor is measuring.
