I am running an i3 to a Mac and Cuma. After finally getting all the settings dialed in I can do small prints from the Mac through the USB but larger prints it stalls out and the display says stepper stopped and the extruder is sitting against the material and the bed and extruder are still hot. I have tried multiple prints. Any ideas on how to diagnose or what could be causing it.

Hey John,
this sounds like the USB connection to your printer is breaking down after a certain time. I have no idea what kind of options there are on a Mac, but maybe you’re able to prevent the connection from going to sleep in the system settings.
A better way to circumvent this problem is to add an SD module to your board, maybe there is already one included in your display. That way you don’t need the computer hooked up to the printer at all.
Sincerely,
Jonas
thanks, that is what I was thinking but it happens with the SD card also
What about the temperature of your steppers? If they get too hot (~60°C would probably be my threshold), reduce the current either through the potentiometers or software.
I need to put a thermocoupler on the stepper and see

Something to consider.
It is -not- recommend for any 3d printer. Due to communication pauses and USB sleep mode.
Especially when windows 10 was introduced there was a big rise in USB printing issues, but this is prominent in all computers -especially- laptops due to trying to conserve battery power.
I see you still have this issue when printing over SD card as well.
Is it stopping at the same point as it does over USB? (make sure when printing over SD you don’t still have the USB cable plugged in)
If not, is it stopping at the exact same point each time with SD. If it is stopping at the same point it could be you removed your SD card from the computer too soon and the gcode is incomplete (you would be surprised how common this actually is)
Have you tried other models, maybe there is an issue with the STL your trying to print?
What slicer are you using?
