I just got the black ctc printer for my son for xmas. He has plugged machine in and made test prints it had. But how do we download all the softwear it needs to actually use it?

CTC makes a few printers, but the consumer versions are all going to be pretty close in operation. First thing to do is read the manual. It will explain how the printer can receive files to be printed, either from a memory card, or through your computer. It also talks about the software involved it running it. Here is a link to one of their manuals. Start there, and then see where you stand.

Depends on what you want to print. I use Makerware to open STL files then export them as x3g files onto a SD card, which then does the printing.

To create STL files I use CREO…but you can download them from the net if you are just wanting to print 3d items
