I printed this part for a friend of mine and I’m wondering whether this would be acceptable based on the quality guidelines for FDM. It was printed with supports which is why I’m assuming the bottom of the over hang came out like that. Would the lack of material on the bottom face be acceptable?

What program did you generate your files in for printing?
Hi I used Simplify3D. My printer is the Prusa MK2 and I printed at 300microns layer height.

Ok, that’s great to hear! Within Simplify, in the support tab, can you take a screenshot of your settings? There are some options that can be tweaked to give you cleaner surfaces where the support contacted the print. I have a MK2 as well, so I can try to help steer you in the right direction.
I attached a photo of my settings. Thanks for your help!

It’s no problem at all! There’s a section called “Dense Support Layers” in Simplify (see the image I attached), which essentially print a a semi-solid layer of material on top of the support structure, which creates a “shelf” for the part to rest on. This makes the underside of the print much smoother because it’s more like printing on top of a layer on the actual part instead of a support structure. I would suggest setting “Dense Support Layers” to 2 or 3 layers, and see how your print turns out.
Check out this forum post for more info, which contains images to better illustrate what I mean.

That is exactly the solution I hoped existed! Thank you very much. I will try out this setting
Again, I appreciate your time
