can someone please help me I’m pretty sure the extruder is slipping on the filament because some layers turn out fine while others come out all pitted and with holes or gaps

Have you measured the diameter of your filament? Check several spots along a couple of feet. If it is slipping occasionally and the filament diameter is inconsistent that might explain it.

Here are a few things to check. Make sure you are running the filament through at the correct temperature.I generally run it through to start at the middle of its temperature range. Make sure the gear that spins in your extruder is not clogged up with shavings of plastic then check to make sure that the extruder arm that holds the bearing is not cracked or damaged. If you are still having problems at this point it is time to check your nozzle to see if you have a blockage if you do clean it out using one of the many methods described all over the Internet. Also are you hearing clicking from the extruder motor, when it is trying to push plastic?

I am using repetier host with cura as the slicer
Usually this is dependent upon the slicer. I had many similar problems with Cura, and never did get Repetier working properly; I switched to Simplify3D, downloaded the profile for my printer, and it’s all good. Sadly, it’s ~$150.
