Hi guys, I’m new to 3d printer. I got Wanhao Duplicator i3 v2.1.
I tried printing romulan birds of prey tos 16mm in length.
I have attached a file. Can you please guide me as what setting should I set so as to get a print of it.
The problem is that once the raft is made the printing starts 10 mm above the raft leaving behind a tangled mass of the printing thread. so the print does not come out the way i want it to be.
Again can you please tell me the proper setting that I can set, as most of the prints which I’ll be printing may be no bigger that 30 mm in length, I tried with a biplane print … but the results were the same.

Can you share the .STL file you are trying to print? Using cura to read your gcode it seems to me that only a small part of the print touches the raft and the rest is printed mid air, just as you experience this leaves a mess.
Ensure your slicer settings are correct
Start g code:

;Basic settings: Layer height: {layer_height} Walls: {wall_thickness} Fill: {fill_density}
;Print time: {print_time}
;Filament used: {filament_amount}m {filament_weight}g
;Filament cost: {filament_cost}
;M190 S{print_bed_temperature} ;Uncomment to add your own bed temperature line
;M109 S{print_temperature} ;Uncomment to add your own temperature line
G21 ;metric values
G90 ;absolute positioning
M82 ;set extruder to absolute mode
M107 ;start with the fan off
G28 X0 Y0 ;move X/Y to min endstops
G28 Z0 ;move Z to min endstops
G1 Z15.0 F{travel_speed} ;move the platform down 15mm
G92 E0 ;zero the extruded length
G1 F200 E3 ;extrude 3mm of feed stock
G92 E0 ;zero the extruded length again

In cura, go machine > add > prusa i3 mendel.
This works.

Hi,
I’m using Cura and did add prusa i3
Im looking at a scale of 16mm. Please find the original file which I have uploaded.
Can you also give me a brief about the setting while using or creating a model of 20mm in length.I was advised to use Support type: Everywhere, and Platform Adhesion Type: Raft. This also created a mess.

Hi Micheal,
As requested, I have uploaded the original file
romulanbop_0.stl (116 KB)
Use ‘‘touching buildplate’’ and a brim
First of all, You can’t actually change the separation distance between the print and raft in Cura, therefore I suggest using Slic3r, SImplify3D etc… I usually use a distance of around 0.15-0.5mm. (Picture attached)
Secondly, I think having a raft here isn’t necessary, as bed adhesion is the least of your issue, just remember to use a denser support structure because your print is very detailed.
Hope that helps
Hi Will,
I tried with that combination… but the results are the same.
Maybe the setting which I’m applying are not correct… can you please guide me with the settings?
or maybe Cura has some limitations for the scale which I’m aiming for, can you recommend me any other user friendly software. I’m learning from the net to get the results as I have no previous coaching, in that case can you also guide me to some online tutorials from where I can educate myself instead of trial and error method for achieving the results?
