Hello All,

I am getting a 3D model of a bacteria printed for the company I work for. we are looking to have it professionally painted. What is the best way to go about that?

Thanks so much

Are you looking for a professional modeler of are you looking for painting advice?

I have painted a number of models. However, a nice finish requires a lot of post processing, especially if you are using airbrush/spray paints in many colors. I honestly don’t know who to approach for this kind of service, since I always paint my own models, but I have included links to photos of some of my models to see what you can expect in a painted model.

I realize you’ve probably found a painting service by now but keep us in mind the next time you have a need. We have a 30yr+ painter on staff who can do wonders with paint and various finishing techniques

One of the biggest issues with FDM models are the layers. What usually happens is the paint will settle into the crevices of the layers.

The solution for this is to do some post-processing work to the model, which you have a few options:

  • Acetone wash/vapor the model if it is an ABS print
  • Lemonene wash/vapor if the print is in PLA
  • Sand the model down

Once the visible layers are mostly gone, sand the model down and give it a coat or two of a paint adhesion agent.

From there, paint!

Good luck!
