Hello All,

I just ordered a Wanhao i3 Duplicator 2.1 this morning. I know there is a ton to read on this popular printer and I’m not familiar with all of its features yet. Much reading about tweaks, upgrades, etc. I know that off the bat I will need some filament and possible immediate upgrades to this such as a glass bed/build platform. Perhaps to get me started, someone can possibly throw out a few ideas that are essential that I get immediately (glass bed, bearings, z axis stabilizer that I think I reada about for example), as well as the most recommended brand filament (if there is one) in 1.75mm to prevent jamming etc. Sorry to sound naive. I’ll be reading as much as I can about these when I have time but bought this mainly to print out my designs from Solidworks. I know that Solidworks can print in .AMF as well as standard .STL files, not sure which is recommended to print the best quality also and with multi-color prints if that is even possible (I think I saw ones that were). Thanks in advance.

Hum. Essentials you say. Well considering u r talking about a glass bed make sure to get some sort of either tape or glue to put on this bed before u print on it to give the print something to adhere to or you will have either warped prints or prints that simply do not even print out. Things I did when I got my wanhao (now mind you I have a duplicator i3 plus so not exactly the same and I would make sure u know the differences so u do stuff specific to your printer) but I got a new nozzle so that I could print with abs and I also made sure my area was ventilated because abs needs a well ventilated area to print. Make sure you level your print bed well and follow the paper rule (paper high between nozzle and platform across the entire platform). As far as file type does I have never used amf before as I always use stl but I have also never had a problem with the quality of stl and the prints have always came out perfectly for me. PS. I love glass beds and they work great just know that what the aluminum bed reads is not necessarily the temp of the glass on top.

Aluminium Y Carriage upgrade is worth doing (they are on eBay), and the z brace. Some people prefer the Microswiss hot end but I have 8 machines using standard nozzles s for PLA they work fine.

Good morning and thanks for the response! These are great suggestions. I guess for starters, I can just get the two things you mention. I think the upgrades are rather inexpensive from what I saw. I plan to use PLA which should be fine for what I need. Although the I3 can print from different media, I guess PLA and ABS are the standards for everyday stuff.

Thanks for the response! Good info here. I guess a glass bed would lay right on top of the standard aluminum build bed that comes with the printer? And then you would need some tape laying on top of glass to prevent warping or movement (from the print)? I know bed leveling can be a pain, some come with auto bed leveling but I opted to not spend the extra $ for this. I’ll stick with .STL filetype. Cya.

OK. I just ordered the following: (hopefully they are ok!)

aluminum y carriage upgrade: (this looks to be a great upgrade although I haven’t even gotten the printer yet - should probably assemble with this on from the get-go?)

Couldn’t find the z brace on either amazon or ebay
