I would caution anyone from dealing with XYZ printing. If you read my conversation on “Insane Customer Support from XYZ Printing” you will see why.
I haven’t used the Wanhao, but I do have the XYZ Da Vinci 1.0 (original one before the Pro came out). My experience is very mixed with their product. One of the gripes with the old version is solved with the new Pro version in that it doesn’t use a glass heat bed and that you do have more control over your printing configurations. The positive experience I had with my Da Vinci is that it is pretty user friendly in that I was able to start my prints right out the gates by simply installing their slicer program (XYZware), loading my model and telling it I’m printing with ABS filament. Another positive is that you can simply send your print job over and disconnect. It doesn’t require you to keep a computer connected during the whole print job or upload Gcode via SD card. I also liked that it was enclosed. If you are new to printing it is a good introduction at a good price point, plus you aren’t trying to spend a big deal of time to build it.
As far as their customer service is concerned, it is not the best. They do respond, but there answers seem routine. I have an engineering and IT background so I have a good understanding of root-cause identification, and I don’t think simply telling me to calibrate my printer is a acceptable response. The problem I had would point to another issue that calibration would not solve. I ended up solving the issue on my own.
I have recently graduated to building my own 3D printer. I definitely like it better than my XYZ but there is definitely more of a learning curve.
Sorry I can’t speak of the Wanhao product, but hopefully my experience with XYZ can be of use to you. All in all XYZ is good for the beginner and casual user.
I had this same decision to make, I went with a WanHao/Maker Select. I read too many horror stories (breaking glass bed, no parts availability) about the DaVinci. My choice was at first driven by the price point, then upgradeability. I went with the Maker Select (A Wanhao “clone”) for the generic nature of most of the parts. 8" aluminum bed, good; known motors and available parts, both good points. On the other hand, I have heard very little bad about the Wanhao/Maker select printers.
Though I haven’t even had the chance to set the thing up yet, I am happy with the choice I made over the DaVinci.
I have a Davinci pro and a robo 3d. I would say the pro has had a few issues but there easy to work with and its not to bad to take apart and put back together. This is good if your new to printing and want some practice getting experience. I feel like if the Wanhao had a problem it would need some experience working with it but this wouldn’t happen has often as the pro but would be harder to fix.
