Hi,
I received my Wanhao Duplicator I3 yesterday and I was really excited to get it printing.
But the temperature is fluctuating like crazy and causes the extruder to click at the low points of the fluctuation. I’ve tried AutoPID tune by using M303 c10 s230 in Repetier-Host but it’s still doing the same thing.
Any help would be much appreciated, I am tearing my hair out because I just want to print!
Thanks
Brad
Hi Brad. Have you set the kp, ki and kd values from the output from M303 S220 command in the i3 lcd meny “configuration-extruder”? And also changed the control parameter to pid? /Magnus

First thing is to rerun the auto tune or rather, check whether the settings are actually present in the unit by going into the config via the lcd.
Second thing I’d make sure of is that the nozzle is firmly seated into the heater block, I had noticed on mine when I changed out for an all metal hot end that the temp varyied a lot, due to it not being screwed in snugly (don’t over tighten! the factory nozzle in mine came broken due to over tightening!!!)
Now’s a good time to learn the part and make sure everything about the hot end is snug (again not overly so!).
Also, a problem in the wiring (a short) can allow the heater to heat up but not keep up under load. (see the wanhao google group or 3d printer brain wiki for a visual guide to the well know wire crimp issue for the heater)
Also, make sure you simply are not driving the machine too fast, the clicking is the thing not melting the plastic fast enough and the drive gear slipping.
Good luck!

Magnus has a point. If I am not mistaken, the i3 defaults using dead time for temp control(not home to verify). To use the auto tune values you will need to select PID for the extruder temp control and save everything to EEPROM.
How fast are you pushing the print rate?
