So I’ve just joined 3D Hubs and printed my first Marvin! He is such a cute little fellow, and I wanted to make sure that he would look the best he could on my keyring. I am a jewellery designer, so I am quite used to working on a small scale, even in 3D printing.

I used my Ultimaker Original +, which I finished building at the beginning of January. Since then I have been printing a lot, trying to tweak the settings for the organic and cellular shapes I usually print. Perusing the forums for advice has been amazingly helpful, and the most pertinent tip I learned about was to consider the model when choosing a resolution, as higher res does not always mean a better print. Even though I have achieved a resolution of 0.025 with my UMO+ in the past, for Marvin I used 0.1, mostly because of the small areas of overhang on the eye sockets. I regularly tune my UMO+, making sure the belts and bolts are nice and tight. I also decided to print without infill and support - it just didn’t seem necessary. I used Cura to slice the model, with the following settings:

Layer Height: 0.1mm

Shell Thickness: 0.4mm

Retraction: enabled

Bottom/Top Thickness: 0.6mm

Fill: 0%

Print Speed: 20mm/s

Temp: 210C

Bed Temp: 70C

Filament Dia: 2.85

Flow: 100%

No Support or Adhesion

I also enabled combing and set the z-hop at 0.075

I used Faberdashery PLA filament in ‘Electric Blue’ for this print, which took 28 minutes in total. I hope soon I will get more orders through my hub and can post more images of finished prints! For the moment I have shown some of the cellular cocoon type structures I use in my jewellery designs. Hope you all enjoy my Ultimarvin…

Excellent! It looks like this Marvin turned out quite well. Did you use a raft? Also, I’ve never actually printed without infill… Is it just the thickness of the walls then?
