Hello!
I am new to this forum and I recently got a Monoprice Select mini 3D printer. I have had an issue with all of my prints that seem to be under extrusion related? My printer came with 6ft of test filament and it worked amazingly! When my order of PLA and ABS came in,things started going downhill…
I am trying to print more of ABS because of the rigidity of it (I print remote control quad frames with it) but I having the same issue with both PLA and ABS.
First let me start off with my settings. I use the Cura 15.04.2 slicer. I cover it with a box to keep the nozzle a consistent temperature (window open right next to it) and have moved the spool to try to help it feed better. No matter what I do, it all seems do the same thing and is usually on the same side (most of the time). I have adjusted the bed using a piece of paper and get the same results. There are parts of it that look like how it should, then for some reason it has issue’s. I have tried a bunch of things and nothing seems to have fixed it yet!
These are my Basic and Advanced settings, and some pictures of what is happening!
Thanks!

It could be a few things. Bad model, bad filament or Cura. You could try another slicer like craftware or simplify3d. Craftware is free, so you can try without spending money. What brand of filament are you using? If your MS default settings are like mine in Cura your extrude rate should be at 107? I’m am having difficulty with getting good ABS parts too but mine is mainly delamination. I am putting box over mine also and it helps but not completely.
Thanks for the reply!
I am using some filament from amazon (more than likely the issue). ABS is hatchbox, the PLA is Hictop. I have been tinkering with some settings have been getting much better prints now! No under extrusion! First, I unclogged the nozzle (I guess it was clogged somehow!), turned the diameter size on Cura to 1.71 for faster extrusion. After doing that I noticed it had a never nice bottom layer and the top would get funky. In advanced settings, I changed the layer printing speed to the same speed as the base. Sure, it may take a while. But now my prints look good! No more underextrusion!
I have a mini select also and run hatchbox abs in it. I had some issues with it to start off but now I have it running well. I also print out quadcopter frames. I would like to help but I am not totally sure what the issue is, because my iPad won’t let me zoom on the pictures.

Glad to here. I use hatchbox PLA but haven’t tried their Abs yet. I running through a roll of GP3D ABS right now trying to figure it out. Print has failed mainly due to supports failing, but still some delamination. The one on the right was done on my Cube 3 and layed down on back. Turned out nice but lots of support cleanup on back side
Never had that issue so I don’t think I can help. Just out of curiosity what type of quad frames do you print?
Mostly “Acrowhoop” frame’s made by DIY engineering. I am going to be printing a 180 sized quad here soon now that I have it dialed.
There are a few things I would try… the first and easiest would be to use the newest version of cura. 15.04.2 is about two years old. your prints can live or die by your slicer so use the most up to date one you can. Currently <a class=“link-default” data-popup=“/en/products/cura-software/download-request/120” style=“cursor: pointer; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: univers, Arial, “Helvetica Neue”, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); position: relative; display: inline-block; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);”>2.3.1 is the newest version, the version numbers are a bit counter intuitive. Also have you tweaked your machine at all? Firmware update, or PID settings? the latter may help the most. you probably already know about these but just in case you don’t these are good resources to start with http://mpselectmini.com/mods and https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HJaLIcUD4oiIUYu6In7Bxf7WxAOiT3n48RvOe5pvSHk/edit?pref=2&pli=1#heading=h.55rkuyw7uqlw I hope some of this is helpful.
Cheers!

Not to be disagreeable but many who have used the Cura version directly from ultimaker website have had issues and have found that the custom version that comes with printer has been the better choice. With that said, I just received the upgraded Monoprice version from a friend who just bought the MS Plus. It is v16.02. I am going to use on my maker select v2.1 and see how it differs from 15.04.2 and I’ll let you know
I’m going to give Cura 2.3.1 a try. It seems like when I am doing circular objects, it under extrudes. Worst case scenario, I delete it off of my computer and go back to 15 and use the settings that seem to work. I have not adjusted any firmware or PID settings. I have adjusted the bed and messed with slicer settings. It is slowly getting to the point I want it at.
I do highly recommend updating firmware and PID settings, it may sound scary but it’s fairly easy. If you’er looking for a really good walk though try Life and Times of Tyler he makes fantastic tutorials for the MP Select Mini https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqmTOqv7p_KTy56TK8T9LKQ
OK so I am trying to print PLA now… I’m fixing to chuck this thing at the wall!
I updated the PID’s. I can’t get the printer to connect to Cura 2.3.1 and because of that, I cannot change any settings. So I am still using Cura 15.
I tried repetier and it acted wack. It is still an under-extrusion issue! I have tried slowing it down to a printing speed of 30 mm/s and am currently trying 130% flow , 1.71mm diameter (to try to compensate for under-extrusion) and nothing seems to work! Still get the same results every time.
I either get little “ripples” on the top, or I get thin little lines that do not stay down and throw the rest of the print off! Using Solutech 1.75mm filament that I just took out of the box!
The problem with Cura 2.3.1 is that my printer does not show up in the list. I have looked everywhere trying to get it to connect, but for some stupid reason, no matter what I press it will not!
I never print tethered (don’t trust my PC not to shutdown in the middle of a 6 hr print) so I never noticed that it won’t connect. I just made my own profile for it, though I think it may be a moot point as it sounds more and more like cura is not the issue. 130% flow is pretty high… Have you checked the nozzle? it’s not uncommon for them to get clogged. http://mpselectmini.com/nozzle_cleaning
I just did a cold pull and found some little bits on the end (did cold pills until no more showed up). I then gave repeteir another try. Slowed down settings, gave an extrusion rate of 107% and so far it looks the best it has ever printed. Will post picture of my print when I am done.
Good to hear, glad you made some progress!
