Hello everyone! This is my first post here, so please tell me if I am breaking any site rules. I have been fiddling with my Makerbot Replicator (running on Sailfish), trying to modify it to print using a syringe as an extruder to print colored patterns into clear epoxy. Mechanically the project is going great, but I’m not sure how to proceed with the software…the problem I am running into is that by default the machine will prepare to print by laying down a test line of “filament” (in this case dyed epoxy) before moving to the start position of the first layer…and by doing this, potentially knocking over the container of epoxy. I am looking for a way to modify either the firmware or the Gcode so the print will start by diving the extruder straight down to the start position of layer 0, rather than approaching from the side…and skip the prep step of laying down a line of filament. So far my only idea is to “pause” the print partway through and slip the container of epoxy beneath the syringe, but this solution is clunky, limiting, and risks messing up the epoxy pour. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would look into investing into some software that gives you better control over aspects of your printing, then you can change your start gcode to remove the purge that you do not desire.
Makerbot makerware is an option, (find an older version) or flashprint, or even best, Simplify3d that lets you see and design your own start gcode or remove the purge.
Skeinforge is old abandonware, has not been updated in years, and misses on many newer functions that folks have found desirable to their tool chain.
