Hi all!

I’ve been trying to improve my Marvin print and while it’s getting better I’ve got issues with the sides of his visor-thingy (the little bump between his face and ears). Printing clockwise the right one is at least visible, but not great and the left side won’t print at all. See the pictures for my result/problem.

I’m printing with PLA on a Prusa i3 with a HeatCore Unibody head (0.4 mm) at 215°C (I know it’s high but if I go lower it won’t come out good at all). Very conservative speed. 0.2 mm layer height. If the precise slicer settings would be helpful I can post them.

Any hints appreciated

If you are using a Prusa i3, I would recommend printing with Cura (you did not mention your slicer)

Try a Layerhight of 0.15 and check each layer with Cura (upper right corner button to switch view)

I would recommed to use 0.8mm shell thickness and 0.6mm bottom/top thickness (4layers)

Give it a try, gave me good results.

refering to the temperature -> if you decrease your printspeed, you can go down with your temperature without issues.

Best Regards

Hi Collin and thank you for your input  I’ve been slicing with Slic3r. I’ve tried slicing with Cura, but we haven’t been on a friendly basis, so to speak. I’ll try your suggestions later tonight.

I had some similar problems. I found that my TAZ 5 has a cooling fan on one side and that was the side that printed correctly. Adding a desk fan to cool from the other side fixed my problem. Not sure if your problem is similar, but you might want to look at where the cooling is.

Thanks for the input. While I only have cooling on one side, I don’t think that’s the problem. I’ve tried printing him both ways and the result is the same. However, I will deffo look into adding cooling from the back side as well.

I would lower layer hight to 0.1mm check your extruder steps calibrate if you did not, and check your cooling, try printing with large pc fan pointing at print.

it is really not so good precision printing.

1,pls adjust your layer thickness to 0.1mm.

2nd.enlarge the model size

3rd,lower the speed

thanks, Anne Qiu from JGAURORA 3d printer

Thanks for the input, but neither enlarging the model nor going down in layer height is an option since this is for the test order from 3D Hubs (i.e. has to be that exact size and, in this case, 200 micron). I’m already going so slow, lowering the speed the printer would come to a full stop

Thanks for the hints. I’ll definitely add a second fan to my setup and test that. On this print I have to stick to 200 micron, but I’ll give it a few tests on 0.1 mm just for comparison.

Hi Badpixel, i have a prusa i3 Hephestos (http://www.bq.com/es/prusa) and i use Cura for slicing; And i’m betting much better quality prints (4 star).

Good for you! I get decent prints with Slic3r but I can’t get anything even near decent with Cura (running latest version as of last week - whichever that is). I’ve attached one of the Cura profiles I’ve used if anyone can spot any obvious f-ups I’ve made.

Found an small thing… is your filament 1.77?

and i have a bit changed; like: you have set that your fan goes full at 0.5; i use 0, so is always full, and also some thinknes (i use 1.2 and you 0.8)

I’d say its all good but the filament diameter.

Thanks for checking my settings  I’ve measured my filament (ColorFabb PLA) and it is indeed .02 mm thicker. Actually I’ve found most 1.75 mm filaments to be slightly thicker than that (and 3 mm filaments slightly thinner, though I’ve only used one brand of 3 mm).

I usually go for three perimeters, but someone suggested two so I gave it a try. I’ll go three again for testing and also try reducing the fan to 0.

Cheers

how is it? btw, could it be that is not well calibrated?

I fixed my problems with margins visor by adding an extra perimeter in slicer… 3 or 4 perimiters is usually adequate to keep the visor edges sharp and solid.

this does not solve the problem if a customer wants a 25mm model you cant give them a 50mm model because your settings are wrong, same for the layer hieght, if they ask for .1layer and you give them .2 whats the point.

only commented as i saw this account trying to sell a machine in a similar post
