have a new maker select v2 printer with interesting / confounding problems:

1 broke the power button on control box (used 3 times) in the ON position. using a power strip so not really a problem right now. Don’t think it is causing any of the following problems just like to know if it can be replaced at some point in the future.

2 it did print 2 test prints from the included micro sd card (chair and swan) didn’t try the other 2 (flat butterfly, seated elephant) with good results no issues. tried to use USB line (had to buy 12 foot extension from Best Buy to reach) Cura shows that it is connected and printing, yet nothing is moving / printing. Cura left hand screen is shaded blue and the abort print tab, lower right of interface screen, is gray and does nothing. Have to close program.

3 tried to install Arduino IDE and got as far as installing to COM port(5) as update and windows doesn’t show the update tab. I’m am admin. for Win 10 computer only user. Not sure what happened here. (but Cura is showing a connection and is trying to print ) Pretty sure I haven’t installed the Arduino IDE in past but it could have been installed as part of something else. I have had a printrbot simple metal kit on this computer which worked great until the mother board hot end connection died for some unknown reason. Got tired of buying $90 motherboards. (anybody know anything about this problem as well? just curious)

4 probably something simple but tried to save to the micro SD card that came with the maker select printer of something (test square from printrbot from a saved file) wanted to print using the card and got a error 13. full sd card? / bad card? 2 prints from the card worked fine.

5 PLA preheat works fine until I try to print then starts to cool if the print doesn’t start. Is this normal?

6 auto slicer in Cura works saying file ready to print but not always. something is on build plate.

does it have to be cleared and reloaded to slice again? Using most recent version of Cura as of 9 / 2017.

6 Not interested in sending back to monoprice for exchange. ($50 !? might as well get another motherboard from printrbot and use that) unless necessary!

7 pretty sure this is a software / connection / oversight problem and not a hardware problem (except for the power switch).

8 would like to get either the micro SD or USB cable working (or both!) or else I will only be able to print the 4 test files on the micro SD. Would rather have the cable.

9 viewed Connecting your Maker Select V2 to windows using USB video on Youtube.

10 thanks for the help!

The Power switch is a common issue, but it’s easily repairable. If you pull the back of the control unit off, you’ll see the issue immediately. I fixed mine in about 5 minutes. Should be some easy to find Youtube videos of a control unit tear down, I’d suggest watching one.

You’re better off not using a PC connection for printing. For larger files, the potential for failure is a lot higher with a PC (Especially with a 12 Foot USB Cable - the shorter the better if you choose to go this route). Use the SD card! Go buy a new SD Card, it sounds like the one you have is either corrupt or needs to be formatted & cleaned. If you’re interested in seeing detailed print statistics & controlling your printer with something other than the control unit, look into a RaspberryPi & OctoPrint.

PLA Preheat will preheat to 215 F I believe. If your print file settings are for LOWER than the preheat settings, it will cool off until it reaches your print file settings. This is normal behavior.

Get rid of Cura, and spend a few bucks on Simplify3D. Thank me later.

Don’t send it back to Monoprice, there is likely nothing wrong with it. These devices are cheap because they are meant to be self-serviced. Things break, things need calibrated, it’s all part of the early adoption process. Take this opportunity to really get to know your printer.
