I am using a Wanhao I3 Plus. Used a raft with 60 degree bed temp and 190 degree extruder. Printed at 100 microns and a slow speed of 2500mm/min with the fan on 100%. What should I do for a better result? https://goo.gl/photos/EeJSSJonix1sEAsKA

Hi @Daniel_Eaton actually I’d say he doesn’t look too bad; he’s a tough little guy to print. One of the easiest ways to improve detail (especially on the hook) is to print more than one at the same time, which allows the “other” part to cool more before the next layer is deposited. Try printing two or even three Marvins at once.

So, @cobnut, do you think it will pass? I have tried so many of these things getting this far that I think my Marvins are only outnumbered by the Chinese army! LOL I’ve got what I call “three amigos” printing now with them spread around a bit to make it slow down more. I can tell Simplify3D to slow down on each layer, but I think that is causing too much heat from the extruder. So I’m doing three of them and sped the speed back up to 2400mm/min. That still may be too slow, but we’ll see.

They don’t look too bad, however I do have a suggestion:

Use a colour other than black or white.

This makes it a lot easier to photograph, which in turn, makes it easier to assess what’s going on with the model. I find grey to be the best colour to photograph, it shows every nuance of the model. Metallic filaments are better still (but expensive).

I made the mistake of just submitting the order with whatever happened to be loaded up on the printer at the time - glow in the dark PLA. So that is what I’ve been printing. I also have black, yellow, and hunter green, but don’t know if I can change colors or not.

I was able to do a single at about 1000mm/min. but doing multiple ones is the best plan and very good observation on going to slow and getting the residual heat from the extruder. Speed is a fine balance with Marvin.

You shouldn’t need the raft. Start the bed temp up then let it start to drop after the first layer to reduce heat transmission. Also see how low you can get on the extruder temp.

I can’t see the pics right now but I am sure @cobnut has a good eye to assess them!

And yes, with the number of Marvins I printed, Rome could have been built in a day!

I actually printed a couple of more sets going faster but on a total of “three amigos” and got much better results. After a total of 13 or 14 Marvins, I submitted one and it PASSED!!! My only problem with it, and something I tried to obscure a bit with some creative angles on my photos, was that the bottom layer of the curved bridge between his legs was not connected to anything when printing at 100 microns. So that area didn’t turn out as polished as I would have liked. I think it would have been better at 200 microns, but that isn’t the choice I selected when I accepted the order. So I ended up doing it with Glow In The Dark PLA at 100 microns…just because Marvin himself wasn’t enough of a challenge! LOL

I would like some clues and tips on how to handle that issue in the future though. I know I’d usually solve it with supports. But if you can’t use supports and have a small bit of a layer that isn’t connected to anything, is there anything that can be done? Could I have, for example, played with raft layer height so that it changed how the item was sliced?
