LCD 2004 smart controller

I’ve got a Reprap clone 2004 LCD Display connected to a Ramps 1.4 board. Sometimes the display comes up with these weird signs.

Anyone know what is going on here?

Is something shorting out?

I think static causes that problem. Easy fix is to pull the SD card out of the smart controller & insert it back in. That has always fixed that problem for me.
