I am new to the concept of 3D printing and need to build a fairly sturdy prototype the is essentially an empty box 9" x 14". Detail and color not important. Is this even possible or just too big and not strong at all. If possible, would I be looking at abs/pula material? I saw something about no angles over 45 degrees. Or should I just go to a traditional plastic molding company for a prototype? I appreciate any guidance.

It’s definitely possible but not many printers can handle that size. I think my printer just *might* be able to handle it. If you have the designs, I could check to see if it would fit.
It’s definitely doable and possible and there are many 3D Hubs with the capability to build a box that size for you. I can’t, my maximum size capability is 12x12x12. Go ahead and submit it and you’ll get takers.

I should also note that this would be a bad choice for ABS as it will likely warp badly. PLA should be fine for this design.
One thing you might want to consider is a scale model like 80% (or whatever) of the actual size. And by the way, PLA would be fine for that and probably the least expensive.
What your asking isn’t enough info to give a actual answer… size is fine, I’m almost done builtin my 20x20x20 printer, but the problem is the empty box part… I don’t know anyone that can bridge 9"… but you have some solutions to this, if your really interested in doing this, message me and we can discuss your options
Thank you Mark. I definitely appreciate your time and advice.
Thanks for the input everyone. I have a better idea of what I need to do now. I think I will just scale my design down and go from there. Thanks again everyone!
Just one other thing to mention. You could leave your stl file as is and just have the hub you select scale it down when they print it. All you’d have to say is scale it 50% (4.5 x 7) or scale the 14" dimension to 10", keeping all measurements proportional. It’s easier perhaps than scaling the cad. Just a thought.
I agree, the scale can easiest be done at time of print straight from the original file
Hi,
Please post the full dimensions of the box LxWxH along with the weight you need it to hold (assuming it’s from the top). If it’s only a simple solid box, there might be more affordable solutions available by using different processes and materials.
Thanks
