I am new to 3d printing having only recieved it for christmas. The filament is jammed somewhere in the extruder of my Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus. I have tried removing it with the included hook but was unsuccessful. Is there anything else I should try before I before I dismantle the extruder, which i very much want to avoid.

Preheat your printer for PLA. Remove your fan(be careful not jam an apex into the fan or break the delicate heater or thermaster wires, or burn yourself on the nozzle which is 450 degrees F), and remove the stepper motor, then simply either pull out the PLA with a pair of needle-nose or use the hook to push the PLA through the extruder. Once you have done either, then reassemble your printer and run your PLA to ensure you are getting good flow.

Don’t be afraid to disassemble your extruder, I promise you will be doing this alot!

Unfortunately if the filament is not visible above the entry point of the extruder, you’ll have to dismantle the extruder.

1. Disconnect your Extruder Fan and Stepper Motor from the back PCB Board that is covered (you have to remove that cover, no screws necessary)

2. Push your printerhead to the right so that the motor is propped by the right frame (otherwise your motor may drop)

3. Unscrew the two bolts on the bottom of your Extruder Fan, don’t pull the bolts out yet.

4. Pull off the extruder fan and heatsink. There’s spacers between the fan and heatsink, don’t lose those. You may also want to hold the motor.

5. Pull the motor straight up while compressing the lever.

Now the filament is exposed.

6. Heat the extruder to PLA from the Tools > Preheat > PLA.

7. At 160C you should be able to take pliers and push the filament in just a little bit and then back out.

7a. If you’re unable to pull it out, Hit ABS on your touchscreen for 210C. Wait a minute and try step 7 again.

7b. Wait another minute if it still does not release.

If you’re at this point let me know. Cool down your printer in the mean time.

You’d have to dismantle the nozzle and heatbreak if it gets this far. Hopefully not.

Good luck.
