How to mod the Ultimaker 2 leds?

I’m looking to mod the Ultimaker 2 with full color led strips. Does anyone have some pointers to get me started? I’m fairly new when it comes to hardware.

The end goal would be to make the color of the LEDS dependent on the state of the print.
