Hi all!

Being new to this, I figured I’d start with the financial side of things. How do taxes work with 3D Hubs? I saw a talk about this from 3d Hubs themselves, but I didn’t find it all that informative.

For those of you that have been doing this long enough to have gone through tax season in the USA/New York, what was the process like? Is this filed as simply additional income? Do I have to include local sales tax with my orders?

3D hubs has not yet been sued/persuaded to adhere to us state tax law. As they are a non-us based company they include vat in orders for the EU but ignore the us tax code for he moment. If you make money you should consult a local tax attorney. (The above and below are not legal or tax advice.) You may be liable for occupational taxes depending on your city/county/state/federal laws if local customers come to your premise to pick up parts. You may be liable for local city/county/state sales taxes if you take and fulfil orders in a jurisdiction which charges tax. If you make money as an individual or business and it’s more than a hobby you may be liable for city/county/state/federal income tax. As a sole proprietor or non Incorporated entity (not an llc, inc, etc) you are liable for income tax as an individual (no expense deductions). If you operate a separate entity from yourself (a business) you are liable for business taxes. Your local governments city county and state all have websites and help lines you can call to ask these questions. Generally (again not legal or tax advice) most US jurisdictions allow you to have a hobby which makes under $600 per year. Good luck on that one!

Also, Al Capone and Wesley Snipes went to prison for tax evasion  (All Capone had to do is file and pay federal tax. The IRS cannot share data with local or federal authorities and you can pay taxes for illegal activities as well as legal activities)
