Hi guys - since we’re all 3D enthusiasts presumably, I was wondering how things are going in the 3D hub world. How much activity is actually happening ? Does this site keep you and your printer busy ? Are things growing or slowing ?

Hi @Mandlbaur Is your question Johannesburg specific, or in general

Well I was thinking Johannesburg specific because that’s where I am setting up my hub but what’s going on where you are anyway @Filemon ?

Well, I’m in Amstedram & New York and a lot is happening here

But if I’m not misaken there was a Johannesburg 3D Hubs meetup recently right? I think @Arnoldas supported that. @Arnoldas any contacts or suggestions for @Mandlbaur?

Hey @Mandlbaur , a few weeks ago we had our first event in Johannesburg that means that cool things are starting to happen in Johannesburg! Few events are in the planning with our new Mayor @Trobok for March, we will publish them by the end of next week so look out for that! They are still in development so any requests or interests are welcome! What do you guys wanna see? Meetups, workshops, Print shows, printing competitions - just shout out your idea and let’s see what can we do together!

hey there, from my own experience things in Johannesburg are moving quite well, in the past two years I’ve done business with various people whom in the beginning had little or no interest in 3d manufacturing and now in 2015 actually rely on the technology. Soon Johannesburg will be a force to be reckoned with in the world of 3d printing.

Awesome to hear that 3D printing is getting traction everywhere. It’d be nice to get the community together more often to share their passion. Any ideas of what could be awesome meetup in Johannesburg? What would you want to see?

I personally would love to see more “maker faire” themed events to bring together like minded thinkers, also just to showcase whats out there.

Oh really @Arnoldas- there was an event in Johannesburg ? So where was the venue ? How many people attended ?

Yeah, our dear Mr.@Trobok launched first 3D Hubs meetup already with 20 people RSVP’ing. Here are more details: https://www.3dhubs.com/johannesburg/events/3d-hubs-meetup-johannesburg

P.S. This is exactly the space to express any Interest or ideas that you would have about the meetup, so I you have any just let us all know here and the power of community might make something happen!

@big_ideas Yeah, that’s exactly what we like to see in our communities! Like-minded people just getting together speaking about their passion and showing their work to others. It’s very important that people express the need for such events so that the community can react. I am sure it won’t take long until the events like that start happening more often as long as we have people who want that!

@Mandlbaur Yeah we had our first event, was really great, next one will be in April. Welcome to the community  Any questions just shout.

Rick

@big_ideas, I totally agree. I think Johannesburg is going to blow up in this space. Already so many things happening here and growing so fat. in the 1 year I have been back I have noticed a huge increase in interest as well as people with printers. Looking forward to seeing what goes down locally.

The one idea we have been chatting about is to have a Robot Party every so often. Idea being that on a sat or sun we all get toegther with our machines and various filaments and just spend the day messing around. I think the one big thing here is the speciality filaments. They are so expensive to bring in so this may serve the purpose of being able to experiemnt with various materials, colors etc before placing big orders, as well as an exchange of tips and tricks.

Agreed.
