To dress up as and surprise my friend, I made a 3d printed mask of his face. I had scanned his head a few months back so he could experiment with the textured mesh using different rendering and animation techniques, and had kept this all secret until Saturday night. Using my own face scan as a guide I could scale his up to fit my face.

It was sectioned into 4 pieces to fit onto the Up!Plus 2 printer. I used Color Fabb’s Wood filament at 0.25mm layer height.

After glueing together, some filling with dolphin glaze was used to fill the joins and smooth off the print layers around the cheeks.

Then I used Montana Texture spray as a primer.

And finished it off using Loop acrylic spray paint as a base coat, and Montana Gold transparent spraypaint (hazelnut and black) to add tone and depth and a selection Montana and Pentel markers to draw in the hair details.

Here I am just after I scared the life out of him at a nightclub in Cambridge on Saturday night.

Wow great job - impressive result!

THANK YOU!

You’re a legend, @Solid_Models! This must be one of the most hilarious costumes I’ve ever heard of  How did your friend react?

He looked like he was in shock. Just shouting "who is it who is it? " I didn’t think it would cause such a disturbing affect.

Dude… Ever think of working for the Mission Impossible team?

You REALY should have bought the wig too… 95% there…

I like it. (I’m an experienced 1 month printer. I can make anything too.

As long as it’s black, square with lots of ridges…)

Haha this is gold!

haha! Great! what scanning technique / equipment was used for this ?

Photogrammetry using an artec spider. Some post sculpting in Zbrush and prepped to print in Magics.

Reminds me of the movie Face/Off haha
Great idea and execution.

Best costume idea I’ve seen so far this year!!!
