Hi makers,

I’m about to purchase a Formlabs Form 2 SLA printer.

I’d be happy to hear from anyone who has experience with this printer.

I have tons of experience with FFF printing, But I’m new to SLA.

Is it reliable?

Would you recommend it compared to other SLA printers?

Thanks,

Uri

Tested.com did a in-depth review, and gives a pretty good idea about it.

Hi Uri!

I’ve had my Form 2 for a little under a month, and like you, was very new to SLA printing but really familiar with FFF. I don’t have experience with other SLA printers, but absolutely love this printer (more than my FFF printers, but don’t tell them that). Everything about it is designed so well, and it really is a plug-and-play style printer. Within a couple hours of it being delivered, I had a couple Marvins printed and have since printed far more complicated models like Renaissance statues (La Pieta, David, etc.) and high-resolution dental models on it. I’ve only had one failed print out of the prints I’ve done so far (I’ve gone through almost 2 L of resin), and the failure was my fault because I tried to cut down the use of support material a little too aggressively.

In terms of print quality, the prints are beautiful that come off of the printer. You do have to be a bit careful with support placement and removal to try and minimize any damage that might occur when you remove supports. The support leave behind little blemishes on the model, but it’s really easy to remove these with a light sanding and a coat of primer (or polishing for clear resin).

The one thing I would like to point out is that switching between FFF and SLA does require entirely different print processes. SLA printing is very different from FFF printing, and the way you orient/support a model is more or less the opposite of FFF. But this is pretty easy to learn as you go, and PreForm (FormLabs slicing software) does a great job of doing it for you until you get the hang of it.
