I was thinking about designing a set of bowls and possibly other dishware to 3D print. But I don’t know what material would be the best affordable material to use. I know pp is good to use, but it’s not the cheapest. What would you suggest?

I’ve heard of a few different food safe filaments which I can list below, but I’ve had no experience with them so do not know what they are like or how well they work. Unfortunately you’ll have to look into it. Here they are:
Apparnently some types of PLA are also food safe.
Hope this helps.
Sound cool! I would be careful with choosing the materials though. If you’re really going to use these items every-day I don’t think that there are a lot of conclusive studies on which materials are really safe

You can print is With PLA Purement filament it’s anti microbial
XT from ColorFabb white, black and gray are safe to use. You can find the certificate on there website.

The filament may be classified as FDA approved, but you have to take into account the printing process…
ie… brass nozzles can have 2% lead content… Doesn’t mean it will contaminate the print, but the possibly is there. Plus if your printer uses a Bowen tube… What about the material which has already passed through it? Did it have harmful ingredients? Were they food safe?
As Arnoldas said, there is not exactly many studies on the whole process and what would be considered ‘food safe’.
I’ve looked up a fair bit lately, and conclusive information is extremely difficult to find, at least for me it has been.
Cheers,
Tim
I agree… PET or some types of PLA. PETG would be my first choice and it’s stronger and more heat resistant than PLA

Mattergeek offers a dishwasher safe and FDA approved filament…never used it personally.

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like it will be possible for me to design some dishwasher to 3d print. The only issue now is to find a hub that uses any of the correct filament.
I’d be happy to print for you, however I do charge 50% of my cost for a custom filament request unless the order total is over $75. It would probably be roughly $20 for this material.
I ship to the continental USA. Check out my hub, and feel free to send me an inquiry if you have more questions!

Where are you located? Probably best to go with a hub close to your location
If you want to choos food safe prints i would definitely use PETG as material.
It has some great advantages. Have a look at my Hub. https://www.3dhubs.com/bregenz/hubs/dawinci
* High resistance
\* Food authenticity
\* Optimum mech. characteristics
\* Resistant to chemicals
\* Excellent thermally deformable
\* Flame retardant (B1)
\* Fully recyclable
As was mentioned, along with print material you want to be careful with printing process. Stainless steel nozzles are available that don’t contain lead, and you’ll want to make sure that the extruder gear is stainless as well.
I stock red, white, blue, clear, and black PET. This is decent material when looking for food safe material.
