I’ve seen it previoiusly posted that the fan on the CTC mainboard is not needed and is a relic of an older design. Is this the case? It’s so noisy and i’ll like to disconnect it, but obviously dont want anything to overheat.

I’m not sure about disconnecting it, haven’t tried that myself - but if it’s making noise then it’s probably just loose and needs to be tightened (happens to our CTC’s all the time). Conversely it’s simple to plugin another fan if the blades have warped and are brushing the outer edges.

Dont get rid of the fan its there to cool down the heatsinks on the motor controllers. Get a step down converter from 24v to 11/12v , i have one where i can adjust and it works fine like this.

My fan has been unplugged for over a year. No problems here.

How often do you have it running at a time @Timothy0413?

@Aceadam yeah that was my concern, but i also saw on a thread i can’t find anymore that the heatsinks don’t need cooling and that the fan was for something else

I usually have it running several hours on and off at least 4-5 days a week. The longest continuous print was 13 hours. I remember reading the same post you are talking about. And from several videos on youtube i watched if the drivers overheat then it would skip steps not just burn up… So i unplugged the fan and never looked back : ). With the fan it got to where everytime i turned the printer on it was really loud and annoying… Before I unhooked it I did order a pack of 5 40mm fans on ebay and replaced it one time that worked for about a month then it was right back to making the noise so i did a little research and unhooked it. I’m not saying It wont hurt anything but as far as mine goes i’m not hooking it back up unles i have a problem and over a year with no problems.

i just wouldent wanna take the risk. At 12v its quiter than the one on the printing head so to me it makes sense to spend £5 at the most rather than risk the board going pop!

thanks for the fast reply. do you have a link to a suitable stepdown converter - not sure what i should be looking for

are u from the UK or USA? ill giuve a link and you can easy see how they work.

in the uk, thanks for the ebay link, i’ll get one bought

I swapped mine for a 12v pc fan with a resistor in line just to quieten things down. I did the same with the PSU fan with an adaptor/new case top to allow an 80mm artic cooling F8 fan to be used instead - in fact I’ll upload the design later.
