I’m getting my first 3D printer for Christmas (a Monoprice Maker Select) and am trying to figure out where to locate it. Choice #1 is in on a shelf in my study/lab which is on the second floor of my house in a converted bedroom. Choice #2 is in the basement in a 42u server cabinet that is currently empty and unused. The cabinet doesn’t have a front door but is enclosed on the sides and back and has sliding rails I could put the printer on.
Putting in it the lab would be convenient but might be annoying due to noise and fumes. On the other hand, it would be right next to my computer and tools and it would be easy to work on.
Putting it in the basement means it is less convenient to access but noise and fumes would not be an issue. I’m also thinking that the server cabinet presents some pretty nice opportunities for customization - LED strips inside for lighting, an exhaust vent since it would be adjacent to an outside wall, a built in spool spindle, etc.
If it matters, I plan to put a Raspberry Pi with OctoPrint on it, no matter where it is located.
Based on your experiences with a 3D printer in the house, would having it close outweigh having it isolated? Or vice-versa? Thanks for your help. The printer is currently sitting under the Christmas tree so I can’t play with it yet but I can certainly get everything ready for the day I unwrap it.

I recently got a 3d printer and am printing constantly, having it right next to my computer is nice because i’m there half the day, then if you have any failed prints then you know and can stop it, it does get pretty loud though, if you have space an enclosure is nice, like this one: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1843235 I’m planning on making one and putting it next to my computer.
