3D Challenge & Expo for Kids/Community:
I can’t believe it’s plastic

RPGA’s Creative Challenge in 3D printing is happening this Sunday at PS 175Q in Rego Park, Queens. It will include learning, designing, and sharing an innovative technology with NYC. Plus, some of the items on preview were printed with 3d hubs.

It involves schools from Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, and NJ -20 teams in total and many partners from all over Queens including Woodside, Astoria, Rego Park, Ridgewood, Flushing, and Laurelton.

The teams worked from January to May designing items that will fit in a 2.7 inch plastic capsule that will be in a toy machine similar to those found in front of toy stores and pizza shops.

To increase the impact of the challenge, RPGA also used Skype to create teams. Meaning, a team in Queens is made up of Rego Park students and NJ students. It’s great that the team will actually meet at the event for the first time," says the New Jersey team coach Janiece Kirton.

Students were asked to design pieces for between 5-10 capsules, come up with a company name, and branding surrounding their product. At the event students will have a 1 hour design session and then share their designs/fabricated pieces with the community and judges for a chance to win 3d designed and printed awards.

“It’s exciting to see this technology in the hands of kids,” says Yvonne Shortt the Executive Director of the organization that piloted the event-CC3DP-last year.

Team coaches came together in December to learn about the challenge. Then, they went back to their schools to work on designs.

On May 17th the designs will be revealed to the community and the other teams. We also have an excellent group of judges who are volunteering their time and expertise to help award 3d printed metals.

There will also be a 2 hour expo from 12:00-2-00 when families/artists/ kids/creatives/the community can come in and learn about 3d printing, see beautiful pieces created by the teams, vote for a team they like and be inspired.

“This year there are some really gorgeous pieces. Some teams have really gone above and beyond creating small works of art,” said Ms. Boldebuck, an industrial designer for RPGA Studio.

One gorgeous design created by a team is below. Their company name -Mini Magic. Their tag line -inspired by childhood and nature.

Can you believe elementary school kids used cad (Sketchup) software to design this? Then, they painted it after it was 3d printed.
