Hi all,

I’m building an Ultimaker 2 Extended clone I found on thingiverse (link below) and I’m trying to understand how can I manage to print high res details like a genuine Ultimaker

As fas as I’m aware, the “resolution” is defined by 2 things

1. Nozzle diameter

2. Stepper motors (X, Y and Z) micro-stepping capabilities

My concern with the parts I’m planning is that they are not Ultimaker branded. I chose these to build my clone:

- MKS Gen 1.4 + DRV8825, this will allow me to acheive the 1/32 step for finest movements

- Genuine E3D v6 with exchangeable nozzle

- Basically noname Nema 17 I bought from Amazon 1.8° stepper motors (length of 40mm) to have enough torque

Am I on the right direction ?

You’re better off with 0.9 degree steppers, and I’d ditch the DRV8825’s. They have an issue resulting in lines in your print that are way bigger than the 1/32 resolution. If you’re feeling rich then TMC2100 are the go-to driver now. If not then use the venerable (and very cheap) A4988.

4988’s plus 0.9 degree steppers are much more accurate than 8825’s and 1.8 degree steppers (despite the same theoretical resolution).

Thanks for your comment, makes perfect sense.
