Any recommendations? I’m new, only 2 days into printing with the Ultimaker 2 and i think i have some really bad white filament (maybe it’s me??) so I’m looking for brands and options to achieve a nice smooth print!

Or is it all about nailing the settings down to a fine art?

I currently have some “e-sun” filament…

We have got an Ultimaker 2 for 8 months. We used to print with Ultimaker filament, Colorfabb Filament and Cartridge World Filament. We’ve got good result.

Try a layer height of 0.1, shell/bottom/top thickness of 0.8 and 20% fill density. Nozzle temp. of 230, bed temp. of 60 and flow rate of 107%. This, or close to it should work, if not, may just be dodgy filament. Did it get moisture from being left out? White is notorious for showing up imperfections too. Hope this helps!

Just need to ask why ABS and not something like Colorfabb XT, which prints like a dream on a Ultimaker 2 and does not smell evil.

And yes i spent months tweaking my machine both settings and hardware to get to the point where I get consistent feedback on quality.

Hello, the settings certainly help in obtaining a very good quality print but we also recommend using the ABS from Ultimaker which can be found either on their website or if you are in the UK on our website under supplies. We have found that these work well with the Machine. We have not used e-sun filament so can not advise on the quality/settings of this.

Hope you manage to get some good prints from the machine.

To get the best Marvin, print slow and low; 20mm/sec or 30mm/sec at 230C, if your ABS goes that low.

Also, 3D printing is not quite a science yet; more of a dark art still.

If your brand new to 3D printing skip the ABS, and XT and go straight to PLA. Get some good quality stuff and learn from there. Once your good with PLA I reccomend XT as well. The thing is when you print ABS it releases some pretty nasty chemicals that aren’t to good to breathe in! XT on the other hand acts like ABS, can be vapor polished and glued like ABS, but doesn’t have all the ugly properties of ABS. XT can be a tad fininkey to get printing right when you start out so that is why I reccomend PLA since it just works!

One other word of warning is dont’ go for cheap filaments! Ever… they are more frustration and heartache than they are worth in potential cost savings. Not to mention who knows what toxic impurities your breathing in!

the one on the left looks good, the one on the right is really bad. were they printed one after the other or all at once ? Were they printed at different resolutions. The devil is in the detail, we need to know the detail.

Great advice! Thanks! Do you know any good brands for PLA?

Haha! Noted!

Why? Well to be honest i didn’t know XT existed… Until now…

I think i will buy a spool and see what i can come up with!

for me the same as “designedby36” colorfabb XT.

just test http://colorfabb.com and use the tips & tricks XT-WHITE

Thanks! I will look into these other brands!

Hey! Thanks for the tip! Here’s to experimentation!

Thanks for the reply! I’ll give this a shot!

Me (and a lot of others here) would say ColorFabb filaments. They seem to have really consistent and well printing filaments. If your in the states go to www.printedsolid.com and grab some of their PLA/PHA sample as well as an XT sample while your at it! I had some issues with the Ultimaker PLA that came with my machine but when I jumped to the ColorFabb I have had 0 issues outside of operator error.

All printed with varied settings…

Further most left (260 nozzle, 110 bed, 50% speed, 60% fans)

further most right (230 nozzle, 90 bed, 100% speed, fans off)

The ones on between with varying mixed settings.

Always at 0.1 line height.

I think that’s everything…

Right! Lots of colorfabb recommendations… I’ll try them first!

Noted! Thanks very much!

Thought I would add, I had some really nice results with some glow ABS i bought (manufacturer unknown) printed with settings: (260 nozzle, 110 bed, 50% speed, 60% fans)
