Just got a FlashForge creator Pro today and I find the filament tube holders very annoying. Can I just run filament to the extruder without them or are they necessary?

They are necessary, I would imagine without them filament will just feed out of the motor and have no pressure pushing it into the extruder and instead will fill the room will coils of filament.

Hi HighlyAdaptive, since the reels resist the pull of the extruder to some extent, without the tubes the filament would soon be drawn tight across the back of the printer and would not feed smoothly into the extruder housing. I feel your pain, the path for these tubes (and the wiring loom) could be a lot better.

@garthvh on the FF Pro these tubes simply run from the reel to the extruder housing before the motor assembly - the filament is being pulled into the housing through these tubes, not pushed along them. They’re not true Bowden tubes, just guides.

Yes, you need them. Go onto Thingiverse and search for better holders for both ends. May help out.

If you print an external spool holder, then you do not need them. I do not use them.

@Perry_1 do you mean an alternative to the external holders that come with the FF Pro? The reels would need to be moved substantially to avoid the filament snagging on the body, and you’d have to do away with the plastic cover. Do you have any photos of your setup?

I use a self standing, seperate filament holder. It sits in the back of the printer, and I just thread the filament into the printer. 100s of prints, no problems.
