A friend asked me to create a replacement part for a 50-year-old camper trailer they have. The broken piece is available but modeling an exact copy looks like it might be tough. I was hoping to just scan it.

Let me know!

whats the part look like? Im not sure how well of a model you will get from scanning, you would need to do a lot of clean up.

To be honest I’m not hoping to get a usable model right from the scanner, but at least one that is dimensionally accurate so that I could sort-of do a 3D “trace” of it, if you will.

Can you post a picture of the part?

Can you please send a picture of the part? I may be able to help.

Sure, here you go.

It’s not a terribly complicated piece, but I don’t live close enough to the friend who wants me to recreate it to be able to do much trial and error, so I was hoping a 3D scan would allow me to get the dimensions close to perfect on the first try.

I can scan it for you for a fraction of what the commercial outfits charge. But, it is a simple enough part and has the right color and finish so you can probably get good results by using a photogrammetry software such as Autodesk Memento -they have renamed it to something else but do a search.

1. if you have a windows 10 computer you’ll have a program called 3d scan that you can get

2. Load the Kinect API that allows you to use an xbox kinect to scan.

3. Use 3d scan to capture the part in the highest detail you can

a. clean it up in 3d print application on windows 10

b. sent it to blender 3d or fusion 360 for final work ups

4. send from fusion/blender to meshmixer

5. send to 3d print coding application for your printer.

6 Your done!

HAVE FUN!

Or you can also guess and check : 0 guess dimensions by measuring then using chamfer, bevel and every other tool to try to get it to look like that part.

As long as you get the major dimensions right, you win!
