Hi, guys. I’m from pittsburgh. I started with a prusa explorer kit, printed some stuff with it, had fun, found the limitations of printing without a heated bed (I have tried hairspray and wetting the glass with acetone)… so I made some changes. I have a Megatronics v2 board, got 1/32nd steppers, two heatbeds, physically enlarged the printer to accommodate the 2 beds side by side, but haven’t been able to get the motivation to work on getting it finished (ADHD sucks). I was wondering if there were any other tinkerers out there that might be willing to help/friends or whatever. I am not trying to make a profit off of it, I just want to build cool stuff. Anyone?

I’m from new castle pa. I have a printrbot simple metal. I use blue painters tape and a glue stick and have had good results.
Sure I could be down. I’m from the Carnegie Mellon robotics club and we have access to a couple 3d printers and I have one of my own, so I’ve got a bit of experience tinkering with it, or at the very least know someone who might want to. I’m sure we could get it finished. Where in the burgh are you, and would you consider dropping by Carnegie Mellon to work on stuff? The robotics club is essentially a hackerspace so it has all the tools you might need to build something.
Hey Kipcooley I live over in in Brookline/Dormont but work downtown I would love to get into some local group about 3D printing/tinkering. Audrey_Yeoh is the CM club open to non-CM folks though? While I love my printer i’m already ready to be working on either another one or maybe a cnc or laser cutter. Also since my printer was already built I wouldn’t mind trying to help someone else create something new for the experience. Let me know
I’m in Avalon. 5 minutes up the 65 from the northside. I would be interested in the robotics club as long as they accept non-students.
So the Robotics Club does accept non-students, but they are typically college level students. Ie, students from Pitt or neighboring colleges. Everyone else is welcome, but there isn’t an older crowd in the club. If you want to work with a couple of college level students (mostly guys), then yea, feel free to come over and we’ll give you a tour. Otherwise, our alumni have joined tech shops which are very similar, and I’m sure can give the same support. There is one at Bakery Square.
As a breakdown of our resources: We have a 3d printer, a laser cutter, a machine shop with a small-ish cnc and almost any tool that you’d need to build a robot. We also have members that have built 3d printers of their own so we can typically can help with troubleshooting. We have a small members fee but it’s very reasonable.
A note: the club during the day is usually filled with students working on homework, the real building happens in the late nights (~ 10pm to 2am). It’s kinda what you would expect from college students.
