We had another great 3D Hubs event this month visiting SAIT Polytechnic’s Engineering Technology facilities. It was impressive to see how industry is applying commercial 3D printing and 3D scanning to product development. Thanks to everyone who made it out.

Fantastic @Colin_6! I imagine it was a pretty great tour. What was your highlight?

Hi @gabriela3d, it definitely was impressive. It was a great tour.

Thanks @Nikki! The highlight was probably their Fortus 400. The size and quality of prints that machine is capable of is really impressive.

Nice! Are those the prints in image 7? Want to tell us a bit more about the machine, material and prints?

We didn’t get into extreme detail on the individual printers or prints themselves. What I can tell you is the machines uses swappable filament cartridges of 1.75mm filament. It can print in dual materials, one for the model, and one for the support. They said the Fortus is their work horse, which is extremely reliable. The support material is soluble in a chemical similar to Limonene used for HIPS leaving incredible intricate prints.

The prints in image 7 are prototypes for a new bobsled roll cage. They actually generated the body using a high resolution 3D scanner. They then put the body into their modelling software and attached various different roll cage designs to see which was most effective.
