When I first began 3D printing here in Charleston there was not a lot of actual printing going on. I have to be honest that in these last 9 months I have not seen a significant rise activity, and I am disappointed. We have a surplus of engineers living in our area that work for Boeing and Google, two tech schools as well as a number of universities in the area. What do you think we should do to tap into these resources and really develop Charleston’s 3D printing community? Or if there is a surplus of activity going on where is it?

when i read the 9 months of service, i did think just got out of jail!

As for the printing, People need to know there is a Service, what they can do with the Service, and how they can use it.
Not every one can Knock up a 3D model of what they want and know that you can print it. or if they need to split it down to be able to print it. So, as far as it goes you are helping print 3D items for Computer Nerdish people who might have the ablitiy to make a 3D model.

To bring people in, need to find a way to make it PERSONAL to them, If you can do 3D modeling of a person then that will sell. Print things to order, online catalogo of items you can print off and if any one wants any, you can print them off (Anima Models… Dragons etc)

If you have a Uni or schools in the area, we have a Student Ambassador program which has shown very good results in terms of engagement growth. @Gfisherwils can tell you more if you think that would be interesting

Let me know if there are any universities in the area that you think would be good for our Student Ambassador program and i’ll reach out.

I apologize for the delayed response. I will be calling Trident Tech, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern University, and the Citadel and get back to you which would be interested in becoming involved in a 3d printing or design program. Perhaps along side 3dhubs?

Thank you for grabbing his attention. On a side note I cannot seem to find the edit option of being able to print invoices for my hub. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction.

The College of Charleston has a couple 3d printers on campus in use. They would be a good candidate. I spoke with a member of the faculty and she would be willing to present the idea to some interested students and staff if you email her further information. Since there is not a PM system here please email Melissa at ingersollmj@cofc.edu

Hi @MiketheMech Sounds good to me, feel free to shoot me a mail george@3dhubs.com and we can provide some further educator support to the universities through discounted printing and our ambassador programme

I have 3 printers I was going to add onto here for side work. Is there anyone out there in the Area looking?

So hey. I’m both new to 3d hubs, and new to Charleston. I was pretty revved up when I saw how many makers are online here, but a little discouraged when I read this thread. Yeah, I think the trouble is in making people interested. It can be tough. I have a daughter in Elementary school who will be having a technology fair soon. Unfortunately, I found it out too late to actually sign up, but she’s been passing along that I use a 3d printer at home. Regardless, I’ll be keeping up on her school as a point of contact to raise interest in things just on a more elementary vs collegiate level.

Aside from that, I always thought that, when I got to the point I’m at now in printing, it would be a great opportunity to make movie prop replicas for the comic con/cos play kids, fully finished and painted, of course. Another good avenue would be the hobby stores. Thinking of how many plans that are online for quadcopter bodies, prop guards, props,RC Car stuff, etc.

Seriously, it the problem is raising interest, then it’s the same problem I’ve faced ever since getting my printer. “I have the most amazing invention known to man! Now, what do I do with it…?”
