Hey Everyone! My name is Teddy and I’m a 3D Hubs Student Ambassador for San Francisco!

I’d like to hold a 3D printing hangout at the Workshop Cafe in downtown San Francisco Feb 27th. The topic of the meetup will be filaments and their uses. There are tons of different filaments out there and many of them are fairly similar with their own differences.

A few I would like to focus on are:

1. Colorfabb’s XT based carbon fiber Vs ProtoPasta’s PLA based carbon fiber

2. Colorfabb’s XT vs nGen

A friend of mine that is looking to attend would also like to discuss PET filaments. I do not have any experience with PET so I would love to talk about it.

Along with comparing different filaments I would also like to discuss their best uses/applications. I’ve had a few discussions with a friend of mine debating the two available carbon fibers and what applications they are better suited to. If we can I would like people who would like to attend to bring in some test prints so we can compare more hands on.

If anyone has any other filament types or a related topic please post about it here so we can get discussions going.

I would also like to welcome any Ultimaker users to this meetup so we can discuss the Olsson block for the UM2. I’ve been using one for a while now and it has made my life so much easier. If you’re an Ultimaker 2 user and do not have an Olsson block yet, please send me a message and I may have one available for you.

Nothing is set in stone yet, this is just a post to get users interested in the topic and gauge how many of you would be available for the 27th.

Like I mentioned earlier, I’m looking for host this event at Workshop Cafe because of its convenient location and available space for us. I know they sell/make food there so I’m not sure how they are about bringing outside food in yet. I would like to provide some snacks and drinks for everyone so if anyone has a venue they could suggest for us to use please let me know.

A comparison between PLA and PLA/PHA would be interesting too! I’ve made up my own mind about both materials, but then again I’m not omniscient so asking more hubs would definitely be something to look for. Cheers, Marius Breuer

Sounds interesting to me, being it is on a Saturday I should be able to make it out! I can say from my experience with PET filament is that it likes being run hot and slow but you can make some pretty cool stuff with it. Ive tried XT CF-20 and Proto Pasta CFPLA and each is great but in general I find CFPLA works fine, although the higher heat capability of CF-20 is a nice perk if you intend to use the filament in a higher heat environment.

I should also have some PTFE insulators for the UM2 for sale with me, ill get yours shipped out tomorrow Teddy, sorry about the delay on getting it out!

Great! Hope you can make it this time. Hope I get some time to test out your insulator before the event. Do you have any fellow designer friends you could bring along? I’m hoping to get at least 10 people to show up throughout the time slot. Speaking of which, what time for you that day would work best? 1-4p?

I agree! I have both PLA and PLA/PHA and I would like to get other’s opinion on comparisons. I’ve read a few interesting bits about people discussing them and I share a few of their thoughts. Are you going to make it the 27th? Do you have any designer/printer frineds you can bring with you? I’d like to get a good turn out so we have plenty of discussion.

I would really like everyone to bring in some prints to compare and help with the discussions. I’m already working on a few myself. I’m really stoked to meet everyone in person!

Anyone up for proposing a certain model to print and use for filament comparison? Something tricky! Overhangs, bridging, curves, varying thickness.I wanna hear what you got!

Same here and you should have it in time. Your only like 1-2 days shipping time from me.

As for others… eh not really sure honestly.

And time 1-4 works, its right after lunch so it shouldn’t be super crowded over there.
