I would like to get the XYZPrinting Da Vinci 1.0 which has a plastic enclosure around the printer. I was wondering what benefit this is vs having an open 3D printer? Open 3D printers being something like Printrbot Simple 1403 or the rostock max v2.

If you are interested in printing ABS, the plastic enclosure keeps the temperature generated from the heated bed from escaping, thus the ABS has less warpage.

Hi Andrew,
The closed enclosure is necessary when you want to print in ABS.
If ABS cools down to fast during printing the plastic will start to warp and ruin your print.
I never get higher than 35C but 45C should be best in the enclosed chamber.
When I print PLA I will open the enclosure because PLA needs cooling while printing.
I’ve build my own Mendel90 and had to build an enclosure around it so itwould be a plus when you buy a 3D printer.

Personally, I found that with my Davinci 1.0 when I just leave the door open that there is a good chance of small parts not adhering to the heat bed. It seems that being enclosed helps keep the bed at the right temp. Which is why I am thinking of flashing my firmware and installing Repetier, which will give me more control over the temperature and other settings.

I have a Da Vinci AIO 1.0 and I liked it for my first printer but i feel like for the money there are better printers out there that might be a better option. Don’t get me wrong the Da Vinci is a great cheap first printer, but you are limited to what your can print and what materials you can print as well. Where i fell there are better open source printers on the market that will give you a wide selections of materials and options for the same money. if you want a straight out of the box printer for a beginner then the da vinci is great!

I don’t know what material you are referring to but I only leave the door open when printing PLA.
My pieces, even tiny ones stay on the bed perfectly because of the gluestick I use on the printbed wich is a mirror of IKEA.
The bed temp is for me not very important when printing in PLA. I have even printed PLA on a cold bed using only glue stick for adhession. But for bigger parts a warmer bed helps.
And opening the enclosure works? You don’t need to take off the sides or anything? Do you need another extruder head to go from one material to another? Or is it just the tempacher you heat the first leyer/ n+1 layers, heated beb, enclosure etc?

The main thing when printing PLA is a fan on the hotend cooling the piece. No need to open the entire enclosure. I’m not familiar with the hotend in the Da Vinci but I bet you can find this on their website.
I use an E3D hotend wich handles temps up to 290C. This is sufficient to print all possible filaments.
This is an hotend installed on an open source 3D printer. The way to go if you think you can build one.
