Hi,

I have been thinking of launching a 3D print webshop as a side activity next to my main job. The idea is to let people submit the STL format and I would print and ship. Would it be worth the investment. Are there people doing similar things successfully or not successfully?

Are people here actually making some money on 3D-hubs?

Thanks for sharing your view!

Hey there,

I think it really depends on how much you invest, how mature the market is in your locale and how easy your webshop is to use. Have you been running a hub already, or are you coming into this from a cold start?

Broadly speaking, the more you invest, the fewer printers there will be who can achieve your results and the wider your available geography. If you have CAD skills it would definitely help as you’ll be able to offer one-off and unique designs AND modify customers’ files if needed. Worth pointing out that, whatever printing technology you choose, you’ll need to pay it off fairly quickly as the technology is developing and spreading all the time and you’ll see competition increasing all the time. You’ll need to think about your next investment almost as soon as you get up and running.

Essentially, 3DHubs is a way of setting up and promoting a webshop without going to the trouble of starting from scratch. If you haven’t done it before, it’s a good place to start and there’s nothing to stop you from setting up an independent webshop as your demand develops.

Cheers,

@wiwa1978 we will launch a new widget this week that you can integrate in your website. Making it a lot easier for your customers to place order at your Hub. Maybe worth noting
