Hey guys!

Here comes 3D Hubs’ Kickstarter page update #2. We added two new projects: REIFY and Boulton Eyewear. Both showcase ingenious uses of 3D printing technologies. Here’s a bit more:

REIFY

Our top pick on Kickstarter this week! REIFY makes totems encoded with music and visuals that you can play back on your mobile device. Each totem is a 3D printed sculpture, encoded with music and interactive visual experiences.

Why we like this project? It’s 3D music video! An interesting mix of art, augmented reality and 3D printing.

Curious about the team behind REIFY? Allison Woods (REIFY’s CEO) gave a TED Talk to explain her concept and work:

Boulton Eyewear

These guys want to produce your next pair of glasses, custom made please! To achieve this they plan on using 3D scanning and DLP-SLA printers to make custom fit glasses.

Why we like this project? Customization is one of the great promise of 3D printing. The team behind Boulton Eyewear went through 70 prototypes and spent hours refining materials and finishings for its custom fit glasses.

New and noteworthy:

Reboot the Suit: Bring Back Neil Armstrong’s Spacesuit By Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution kicks off a partnership with Kickstarter, Reboot the Suit is the first crowdfunding project held by the Institution.

The goal of the project is to conserve, digitize, and display Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 spacesuit in time for its milestone anniversary.

With more than 138 millions artifacts, works of art and specimens in its collections (source), the Smithsonian is one of the most important cultural heritage institute in the world. It’s a bit of a surprise to see this project going through crowdfunding (the goal for the campaign to succeed: 500,000$), as pointed by Wired yesterday.

my favorite ‘‘3D printing project’’ of the week too

Indeed , very interested to see a larger version of REIFY in the future night clubs - can you imagine?

Great choices, Victor! Reify, in particular, mind blowing stuff. What’s the criteria you guys use to update your collection?

Thanks man!! Reify is an excellent concept indeed  There’s no strict criteria at the moment apart from creativity of the project/idea, link to 3D printing, deliverability, if someone from the 3D Hubs team loves the project that also helps, etc. It’s pretty flexible
