I have 2 UM2s and need to do some prints with dissolvable supports,

I can take the parts from one of the printers, but has anybody done this or know about the software side of UM2 dual extrusion

DUal Extrusion won’t work with PVA on the UM2 in it’;s current form… you need to build a competely custom head… it’s the reason UM abandoned dual extrusion on the UM2…

I am aware of the Ultimaker situation, I was thinking more of XT or ABS and PLA

you would still have to overcome the issue of heat spill between the nozzles and the fact that both nozzles are on the same layer height so it will bump against prints…

The UM2 has a board fully compatible and practically pre-wired for dual extrusion.

Need to flash the um2 fork of marlin for firmware, after adding new electronics and enable temp 2 in marlin.

Using e3d hotend here… um2 nozzle too unreliable.

Also-- you will lose some build plate real estate

Do you have dual extrusion setup on your UM2 printer or are you dealing with a model you need to swap the material at a give layer?

You can do the second option really easily. Use the pause at z plugin in Cura and pause the print at the needed z. Then just change material, make sure its well purged from the previous material and resume the print.

You can see this post about Creatr upgrade kit for ultimaker 2 :

On youtube there is a movie from ultiarjan with a dual head setup. Maybe thats a solution ?

My cousin runs a Printrbot Plus dual extrusion, and I can manually lift the nozzles no problem

I know the board supports it and I have the parts, but do you know how to do the firmware part? I heard apparently it is supported?

If puting a second nozzle to the UM2 would work, they would have gone for that simple path.

After many hours spent in R&D they decided to drop the idea of adding dual extrusion to the current setup of the UM2, because it’s not reliable enough. You can easily add a second head to the UM2 all was thought for this. For the firmware it’s just some simple modification to specify the second nozzle (you can probably find that information on the UM Forum).

Either way, you’ll be disappointed if you try this and loose some precious time, if you want something that works, take a look at the link pmsirmard gave on the UM Forum, and inspire yourself with the work of UltiArjan
